SynopsisI knew that I wanted to create a lighthearted, brightly-colored film, and I came up with the idea of a character that is trying to put a prized item on a shelf, but keeps getting disrupted by an unknown force. I was inspired by cartoons like Tom and Jerry and Looney Toons, with physical comedy and over-exaggerated facial expressions. The Shadow learns that the Beast is the very same Woodcutter, who was cursed, after killing a bird in his ill mood. The Witch tells the Shadow what to do to save herself and Dawn, and also warns her that she must make haste since without her shadow, Dawn will only live until sunrise. Dawn’s Shadow sneaks into Beast’s castle with intention to kill the Beast but changes her mind and takes a leap into the creature’s dreamworld. There she meets the imprisoned Woodcutter. The Shadow speaks with the man and understands his feelings. She shows compassion and apologizes for Dawn’s behaviour. This breaks the curse and sets the Woodcutter free. Unfortunately, the morning is upon them and Dawn is dead. The Shadow mourns her. But as the first rays of the rising sun touch the Shadow, she becomes corporeal, whereas Dawn’s former body becomes her shadow.
