Bea Lema

Bea Lema (A Coruña, 1985) is an illustrator and comic book author. Her work is generally autobiographical in nature, dealing with themes related to madness, trauma, family relationships, religion, and popular rituals. Graphically, she explores drawing and embroidery as mediums for her illustrations and comics. In 2017, she received the 12th Castelao Comic Award from the Provincial Council of A Coruña for O Corpo de Cristo, her first graphic novel — an autobiographical project that addresses mental illness from a child’s perspective. In 2022, she was awarded a grant to participate in the graphic novel residency at the Maison des Auteurs in Angoulême, France. The book she developed there, based on that first comic and published in France by Sarbacane under the title Des maux à dire, and in Spain by Astiberri as El Cuerpo de Cristo, has received numerous accolades: the Jury Prize at the 2023 Périgord BD Festival, the Audience Award at the 2024 Angoulême Festival, the 2024 Bédélys Award for Best Foreign Work at the Montréal Comic Arts Festival, the 2024 Madame Figaro Heroine Grand Prize, the 2024 Spanish National Comic Award, and the 2025 Best International Graphic Novel Award at the Comicon Napoli. El Cuerpo de Cristo is also her debut short film.
